Full of surprises

We had to know what's behind some of the structures in the house, so it was time to grab a few tools do some organised damage, to nothing essential or with historical value of course.

So with a hammer in hand, we started to make holes in ceilings and floors. The ceilings that we had to look behind were all plasterboard. By the look of it,

they'd been put it to hide cables that obviously weren't needed when the house was built.

The floorboards that we looked under on the ground floor revealed an interesting surprise. There was about a 30cm drop down to a tiled floor. From the hollow sound while walking on them we had expected some space below but not as much and tiled floor was a surprise too. Someone poured concrete all over them to support bricks to support a beam. So I hope that we can get it off without too much damage. These are the kind of features that we would like to keep.

Overview

Nearly everything going on at the moment is about the roof. There's some digging work going on in the cellar and the ground floor, but pictures of holes and channels dug in the floor aren't as interesting. I'll add a separate post for the Roof once a little bit more is done. This post is all circular panorama shots from most of the rooms so we have a record of the process. The Start

After a long time searching, looking at different houses, in various locations, putting in bids, being conned by estate agents that went back on promises and strange auction processes, we've found a house. It's not what we were originally looking for, but there are aspects that we love. The age (1763), the wooden beams running throughout the ceiling and the walls, the thickness of the walls which is due to it being part of the original town fortifications, all of this as well as the potential made us want to buy it.  We also see it as a means to be able to move onto something else, a way to stop paying rent and to start putting money into something that will be ours.

Planning permission is Through

Things are going smoother now. The final hurdles to get us back on track are out of the way, we had to have new plans made (the others were off), and we found out that part of the planning permission application that we were trying to complete, was not necessary and wasn't even our responsibility! Now that the Planning Permissions are through, we can break through! Apart from the obvious way of getting from one building to the other through the front doors, or through the roof, there has been no other connection, until now. The first breakthrough was made at the weekend on the 1st floor, the one that will eventually be the kitchen. This means that we no longer have to run up and down two flights of stairs to be able to cross from one side to another.  The next two on the Ground Floor are planned for this weekend. More to come soon.
